Medic Safety Training from Post 10-00

On February 7th Austin Police Explorer Post 1000 joined the EMS Explorer Post 247 at their weekly meeting. Explorers in Post 247 were scheduled to learn Paramedic-Safety, and the Police Explorers were kind enough to come and teach defense tactics. They covered how to hold a firm, balanced fighting stance, the correct form for basic punches and kicks, and two straightforward methods on how to react when being grabbed by an aggressor.

An important tip that stayed with us through each exercise was for us to vocalize “GET BACK!” High volume is a key point for drawing attention from bystanders to the potentially violent behavior taking place. Shouting as the maneuver is executed is also beneficial for breathing; by clearing the lungs the torso is guarded and better prepared to sustain a blow that otherwise could have knocked the wind out of us.

While the idea of having to use any of these defense methods is a serious topic, Post 247 enjoyed learning from the Police Explorers, and it was a great opportunity for explorers to bond and have some fun. There is a lot we can learn from each other, and we will hopefully be partnering together more in the future!

The only way to escape victoriously was to work together. So we climbed into the back of a pickup truck and figured out how to do just that — and we succeeded! Continue reading

District Camporee

Explorers are seen heading to a report of a patient. They are being led by Capt. Green

Austin/Travis County EMS Explorer Post 247 had the privilege of providing first aid to 440 Boy Scouts at their District Camporee. Five Explorers and four Explorer Post Advisors, along with all the necessary first aid and camping supplies, trucked out to Griffith League Boys Scout Ranch the first weekend in April. The learning process started immediately as the Advisors coached the youth through setting up the tents and cooking area. With a lot of impressive teamwork and good attitudes, all four tents were soon up and the kitchen area was ready. Continue reading
